The Sophienalpe was constructed by Emperor Franz Joseph for his mother, the Duchess Sophie, as a rural summer residence and was renovated at the end of the last century as the "Reststop Inn and Dairy Farm Sophienalpe. From that time it became a popular destination of the Viennese. Formerly the Sophienalpe, situated an one of the three Viennese hills, was reached by a cable railway built some 100 years ago. It was accessed from the Rieglerh?tte by a lift system, the first of its kind in the world.
